Telouet

On Sunday we drove toward the mountains, crossing through the Tizi-n-Tichka pass. It was very foggy & cloudy, so driving was a bit of a challenge and we couldn’t see much of anything. We missed the turn to Telouet and doubled back when a berber man flagged us down, pleading for a ride, saying his car had broken down.  We had no room, he was quite insistent but settled with writing a message for us to deliver. The people at our ‘auberge’ said it’s a scam to lead people to particular restaurants/hotels to get their business. I don’t know.

We had a ~15 mile drive down a gorgeous valley, and the sun came out!

We stayed at the Auberge de Telouet, right next to the kasbah. Very odd place, nice, clean room. There seem to be about 10 different men running the place, a very nice young man, Aziz, took us on a walking tour of the abandoned kasbah (was owned by the Glaoui, who worked with the French, deserted in 1956 when the king returned from exile, as France was about to end its rule in Morocco).  Much of the palace was vandalized, and the left to the elements. Now the descendants of the family are trying to protect/restore what’s left. It was a gorgeous location the auberge was a really great experience, fabulous moroccan salad and beef tagine fireside (cold at night) and breakfast en plein air, on the terrace overlooking the kasbah (good coffee, fresh hot bread and the most flavorful honey and butter I’ve ever tasted!)
