Boulbon, near Tarascon

We are now staying in a home in Boulbon, a small village with a derelict fortress, just south of Avignon. It is a fabulous house, called ‘La maison du puits’ (House of the well) built into some turrets and old ramparts of the chateau. It has a circular stone stair case, is three stories, a really good find! The old castle however, is so beat that you can’t climb on it or go in it. But it’s awesome to behold. We had a great thunder storm with loads of rain this morning and it really made me wonder about what was like back in the day when the fortress was inhabited and the peasants were working the fields, wandering the narrow streets (and the rain washing the sewerage down the center of the roads, as it was done back then). It also made me think of the 2nd Lord of the Rings movie where the good guys are defending the castle (Helms Deep or something like that) against the hordes. Very OLD stuff and so interesting to me. (ps: there's also a wonderful, restored windmill up behind the fortress, they still run it every few weeks, grind local wheat and sell the bread at the market!) Our house is the one with the light blue shutters, french doors. Lovely!
