What a wonderful, roman day today! We drove to the Pont du Gard first thing this morning. The roman aquaduct against the blue sky was awesome. It is a massive structure, part of a 50 km (31 mile) system to bring water to the Roman capital of the area, Nîmes. The source is in Uzès, and the system wended its way across mountains and through tunnels to bring 4.4 million gallons of water a day to Nîmes. It is an amazing feat of engineering, dating from 19 BC! There is a roadway that was added in the 1800s that we could walk across. It was wonderful. There is a very good museum on site explaining how it was built, including wooden structures that were used to frame the arches. Great stop. Very good we went early as it started getting a bit crowded. It was the first time we have really run into any Americans since coming overseas.
