We spent two nights in an auberge on the canal du midi, moving from Provence toward the Dordogne, and had two pretty amazing meals. The first evening there, we walked along the canal, past two sets of locks, and came to a restaurant right on the canal. Many people were arriving for a private function but I went in to ask if they would be open the following night, Easter Sunday. The private function ended up being a sort of ‘open house’ for locals celebrating the reopening of the restaurant, and they invited us to join them for an aperatif, which was fun. We went back to our auberge for dinner. I started with a salade de chevre chaud, delicious greens with phyllo wrapped packed of goat cheese resting on a roasted tomato & red pepper coulis, with fresh warm bacon dressing. Then I had a rich creamy risotto with scallops and a reduction of some sort, followed by a very good black & white mousse, white choc on top and dark choc on bottom. Peter had a salad with smoked duck and tomatoes followed by baked salmon with Puy lentils followed by a very good creme brulée. The following night we went to eat at the canal restaurant and had ‘grillades’, grilled stuff with a huge salad (homemade french vinaigrette), hand cut fries, and steak au poivre (pepper sauce). I also had a side of roquefort sauce, just to compare: delicious (followed by gorgeous desserts of tarte aux pommes, creme brulée, and a tarte au citron!) It was only locals, and 3 locals started playing/singing and were very good. It was a lovely evening and the mile walk back along the canal in the starlight was much appreciated!
